On linen-like paper and with a cream cardstock cover donned with artwork created solely for We’ll Never Have Paris, this is a wonderful little compilation zine. The theme stays strong with “all things never meant to be” done in narrative non-fiction. Ten of these non-fiction nanoseconds grace the pages of this text heavy issue. Travel tales, coming of age stories, and natural disasters are all tucked inside this gem of a comp zine.

This is a beautifully put together compilation zine for people with chronic pain and their allies. In this text heavy zine there are many accounts of people in the zine, activist and radical communities dealing with serious health issues that may not be prevalent at first glance. It can be frustrating and hard to support a friend who has a seemingly invisible illness. This zine gives some insight on how to be there for your friends. If you are someone who suffers from a chronic pain condition, this is a great way to feel in touch with others going through similar experiences.

Another amazing installment of When Language Runs Dry – a zine for people with chronic pain and their allies. I find this zine is just so awesome and important. It is very difficult at times to be someone who has a chronic pain disorder (for me it’s Fibromyalgia). Otherwise, appearing healthy on the outside does not mean that I feel great all the time and I do have specific physical limitations. This is another compilation of essays and even a comic about activist folks dealing with their own chronic pain illnesses. Again, this issue is also for allies to help support your friends who may be dealing with their own pain symptoms and illnesses. Very well put together, highly recommended.

Yes! Another installment of the yard sale adventures with Katie, this time
in the 2008 season. Tales of finding old books and wonderful knickknacks,
peppered with clip art of the found objects at these sales. Katie really has
a way of describing these treasure hunts to the point of which I feel I get
the whiff of an old book or a church lady’s perfume. An absolutely charming
read.

Yard
sale season 2009 with Katie! I love this zine so much and all of the amazing
thift/rummage/yard sale discoveries inside. It is great to live vicariously
through Katie's summer visiting these great sales. She's got such an awesome
way describing the intricacies of the church basements and the awkwardness
of rummaging through a person's belongings in their driveway. Each issue
of White Elephants gets more amazing. I find myself cheering on the amazing
finds. As always White Elephants is cut & paste laid out with images
from the found ephemera.

The Worst is a compilation zine on grief and loss. I find it extremely important to talk about death and dying, and I feel there isn’t enough of it in the activist communities. It seems that people will generally think in “everyone is young an invincible” terms and it can become hard when someone close passes. This zine has a little bit of everything such as personal stories dealing with loss, DIY groups to help you if you lose someone, lists of activities and projects to help you grieve, and a great resource list. A recommended zine to all whether you have lost someone or not. This will help you support your friends who may have experienced the death of a loved one and will help you in your time of need.

I absolutely love Tukru’s handwriting. It really may be my most favorite I have ever seen. This issue of Your Pretty Face… Tukru writes about her past. From first kisses to music festivals, insecurities to drunken hookups, this zine is a peek into how Tukru got to where she is now. Another gorgeous layout and hand colored cover, for this issue.

This tiny gem of a zine is Tukru’s 24 Hour Zine project for 2008. Mostly handwritten with a wonderful layout, Turku starts off writing about a birthday party she cannot attend in Glasgow, but daydreams how the trip would have turned out anyway. She pines for adventure to come into her life, and only gets police ringing her buzzer in the middle of the night to sort out some craziness with the neighbors.

Split with Telegram Ma'am #18
$3 •

A lovely split zine by Maranda and Tukru that crosses the Atlantic ocean, Canada to the UK, respectively. Both sides are extremely pleasant to the eye with crisp cut & paste layouts. Maranda of Telegram Ma’am writes about her small town life and trying to figure out her place within it. She also touches on the freedom of biking through Lindsay, Ontario but also the panic attacks she encounters. Your Pretty Face is Going Straight to Hell is written by a woman named Turku who is Finnish and lives in the UK. In this issue she writes about developing and reinvesting herself in friendships. This includes some adventures with her friends and even a trip to Platform 9 ¾ for the Harry Potter fans. Tukru also speaks of a recent doctor visit to discuss depression.

Jam packed with zine reviews and information on what is currently going on in the zine community. This issue of Zine World also contains columns on the Japanese zine scene and the frustration of losing a PO Box after six years. As always the Letters to ZW section never fails to amuse. Also very encompassing Word of Mouth and Classifieds sections as well.
