Love Letters to Monsters #2
Ciara's
newest zine, Love Letters to Monsters #2, is a collection of several
different pieces of writing on a myriad of topics. The closest to my
heart was her piece titled, “Growing Up – isn't giving up.” It speaks
of the popular anarcho-punk thought that acting as an adult is the worst
thing one can do. Ciara brings up the point that not everyone had fun
childhoods and people do look forward to creating their own path in
life and getting older is nothing to look down upon. I also enjoyed
learning about Ciara's experience in working with the Boston Skillshare
collective and how working in a collective environment to put on an
event is tough and not always full of group hugs. There is also a three
part series in regards to Ciara's recent experience with an abortion.
I found it very compelling and eye-opening when she speaks of what the
funds for an abortion actually have to pay for (such as security for
the clinic, etc). Other topics in this issue of Love Letters To Monsters
are how monogamous relationships can also be radical, the popular topic
of consent in the community, and soaking up all the knowledge around
– learning how to become your best.

Loverution
Jenna
Renegade has one of the best talents for clip art and layout that I
have ever witnessed in a zine. With that being said, her content is
absolutely wonderful as well. Loverution is a zine that just plugs
into your being and forces you to think about life. What are you doing?
Why are you doing it? Are you doing it to the best of your ability?
What could you be doing? This is all wound up into a poetic prose that
will just make your head spin in the most brilliant of ways. It doesn’t
end with that; there are also crafty tips on block printing and frame
making! I highly recommend this zine to anyone who needs a jump start
in life.

Mistaken For Straight
This
zine by Chantel takes a unique look at identifying sexuality. She speaks
of how people assume her to be straight because of the fact that she
currently has a male partner. There is a great book list (including
reviews) that Chantel has read in her journey to understand sexuality
and help define herself. She also discusses why she rejects the term
bisexual being that it only implies binary gender. Mistaken For Straight
also touches on the coming out stories Chantel has experienced with
her friends, family, and even the plumber.

My Time Annihilator
This
is a super interesting zine that takes a brief look at the history of
the 1930's science fiction fanzine. I think my favorite piece of info
is simply the fact that the writer had to use a fake student ID in order
to research this zine at a university in Philadelphia. My Time Annihilator
takes a look at the printing and distribution trends of the era. There
is also an appendix with copies of some of the fanzines researched.
I also loved learning some of the slang of the time period such as “faaan”
and “egoboo”.

New To Everything #8
A great personal zine from Pittsburgh by a woman named Leanne. New To Everything #8 contains quaint stories of memories and observations. She starts off with breaking her fear of motorcycles ending up with her very own motorcycle license. Then, there is Leanne’s love of Doo Wop music and the Sunday nite radio show which brought it to her. Tarot readings and a quarter life crisis follow. The writing in New To Everything is quick and detailed like good photographs. $1.00

Number Nothing #2
Two
short stories of the writer’s childhood. Very short and sweet. One
deals with the unsuspecting bout of dealing with the confusion of sexuality
alone at a young age. The other finds us watching an independent child
fixing his own breakfast to his father’s disapproval. Also, a really
hilarious comic included in the back of when the “5 Second Rule” does
not apply.

On Subbing
Dave is a substitute teacher. A substitute teacher who works with special education classes. This book combines four zines representing four years of subbing work. Dave starts out with a glossary of terms to help you better understand the world he is entering. The talent that Dave has for sharing his experience is unbelievable. You really feel that you get to know these kids and are upset when he has to go work in another classroom, but become quickly acquainted with those children. The stories are hilarious, sad, and self-depreciating all at the same time. This book definitely gives one a greater appreciation for teachers and parents working with children who have special needs. It's absolutely a great read and highly recommended. $4.00
